How to grow sugarcane from cutting stems

Updated: Mar 30

We usually cut sugarcane into the pieces that contain 2 eyes/stems. That is enough to grow to the big bush with 8-15 trees by each one.

Note: To help growers easily to grow on pot (especially for indoor growers in the cold states) we keep sugarcane plantings in the small size like the one on the right side of below picture:

If you received some small cuttings, please understand for that purpose, and do not worry, it will grow as big as picture shown below, if you can give them enough good soils, water and sunlights.

When you buy sugarcane cutting/ stem from our farm , you may receive root or unrooted cuttings with purple color like the above picture shown. But due to cold/chill weather in the winter, some sugarcane colors have been changed to green or light purple, like this picture:

Please dont worry, believe us, they are the same kind of sugarcane, even we cut them in the same tree, but the cuttings maybe different color.

We guarantee about that.

The color of sugarcane depending on weather , soil quality and growing time. Picture below we took from our farm, after growing for 4 months:

And here after growing 8 months from the cuttings:

But after 10 months, the sugarcane will change color to green or light purple on November/December, because of cold weather and lacking of sunlight.

So how to grow?

First , please soak in water until the roots grow, or if it's still fresh, you can still plant it normally.

But I highly recomend you do not need to soak them for rooting, just soak 2-3 days for freshing them, then grow them right away. Sugarcane will sprout the new roots under the soils strongly.

Notes:

1/ In cold states, plant the tops in the 3 gallons pot and and wait until the warm weather to transplant to the garden. I suggest you should plant to the garden in March-April, then harvest in the fall after 6-8 months.

2/ How to plant:

- Make the good soil first: Make the good soil is very important thing. Mix cow manure and chicken manure (purchased at Home Depot, $2/bag) with top soil.

- Sugarcane likes moist soil. Easy to fall, so plant it in the corner of the garden, or you should make fence to support it so it won't fall during storms/hurricans

- Plant at a 30 degree angle from the ground. Make sure that 2 eyes sink into the ground about 10-15 cm and leave 1 eye sticking out of the ground.

- Water a every day or it will die

An another way to plant: No angle, place horizontally, 1 ft under ground.

- After 1-2 months, it will sprout (if the tree already has roots and sprouts, it will grow faster, but the roots will not be as strong as planting sugarcane that has not yet sprouted roots, or sugarcane that has just been cut off and planted. However. It takes a while to take root, but once it's out, it's very strong.)

- After the sugarcane grows about 2-3 ft high, remember to add more soil to sugarcane bushes, water it and add chicken/cow manure and mulches and a little chemical fertilizer (if desired).

But need water them everyday!

I wish you enjoy sugarcane growing!
