Surinam cherry is a tropical plant that can also be grown in subtropical regions. It can be grown at sea level, al- though it is intolerant of salt in the soil, and it has been found at elevations up to 5000 feet. The plant has a long taproot and can survive periods of drought.
The native growth environment temperature range for surinam cherry is around 73 to 100 ℉ (23 to 38 ℃), making it a tropical/subtropical plant. It prefers temperatures between 68 and 105 ℉ (20 to 41 ℃) and can tolerate short periods of temperatures as low as 50 ℉ (10 ℃) if acclimated.
